The most important contribution that HOY has made to the history of Extremadura has been to the birth, growth and consolidation of the region’s identity and of its personality as an administrative, political and historic unit. For many years, HOY included a section called Extremadura Una, at a time when it was important to unite the interests and aspirations of two provinces with traditionally very different social outlooks and demographic compositions.

HOY has also played a major role in supporting culture, literacy and social progress in a region that is economically underprivileged, peripheral, rural and sparsely populated. The newspaper throughout its history has reached all the counties and communities (more than 380)  of a region that consists of the two Spanish provinces that are the largest and least populated and industrialised in the country.
